Battle of the Bands
OK I admit I'm pretty hooked to every Monday's "SuperBand" showing of Channel U. It's probably more interesting than the pure singing competitions because some play their own music, some do a capella, some choreograph their own dance steps and on top of that every week you see some groups surprising you with their own gimmicks. That said, if you split them up into individuals and ask them to compete in a solo competition, most of them probably would not have done as well ( precisely why they form a band). Anyway the weakest link has finally and thank god been eliminated after weeks and weeks of outdoing more deserved groups. Anyway since I have nothing much to do, I shall come up with my own views of the final 8 bands! LOL
(in alphabetical order)
1. Brods - The charismatic brothers are the only duo in the competition and they have been depending on their vocals (and possibly good looks) to help them garner votes. Thankfully they are pretty competent singers and they harmonise pretty well but is that enough?
2. J3 - They are a breeze of fresh air like the judges always say and they are probably the best group vocally, injecting little surprises slowly but steadily. However their style of acoustic + harmonising might be to their disadvantage, appearing somewhat blend in comparison.
3. Juz-B - The a capella band is funny, creative and has been pretty consistent. However, while they are indeed credible, I feel that they are slightly over-rated. Maybe it's because of the live recording, they can sound pretty messy from time to time. But I salute them for their fine work in a language that is completely unfamiliar to them.
4. Lucify - The 5-piece rock band that was eliminated earlier to everyone's surprise. Back after the revival round and much stronger be it in terms of musicality, vocals, image or confidence, I think they have one of the strongest and most easily remembered image in this competition and I think they can go far.
5. Man Tou - A very hardworking band that has been trying very hard to prove themselves. But in the final 8, they are probably one of the most inconsistent and weakest groups.
6. Mi Lu Bing - One of my favourites especially after their recent weeks of performances. The guitarist and drummer have these interestingly contrasting vocals that works very well for the band. Unbelievably creative yet earnest in their delivery, the youngest and possibly most approachable band seems to have emerged as one of the strongest. *Their most recent performance was a surprise move. Brilliant.
7. QI:NOBE - Probably the most professional band in terms of musicality. But I agree wih the judges. They are capable of getting everyone high but that might not be enough. Every week of rock/rap/hip hop style seems to suggest that they are not versatile enough. They may be really good at what they do best but in this Chinese music industry, their brand of music might be too hard for most to swallow.
8. Soul - Almost your typical boyband except they dance really well and I think they actually can sing pretty well too. And their dance choreography is visually very impressive. Very energetic, very professional. One of my preferred bands too.
I don't know who is going to win but I think QI:NOBE and Soul are the hot favourites here. My pick for the final 4? Lucify, Mi Lu Bing, QI:NOBE and Soul.
