If not should be sleeping. But here I am, revamping my blog and writing an entry. First in 3 months? Yea.. Well... I'm having a terrible flu and I have tons (make that a mountain's worth) of work to do. Time Check. 1.47am. I'm way behind time. Anyway, I guess I'll finally make the effort to blog more. I don't know why I'm going to do so but ya I guess I'll TRY. Oh and yes, I'll probably include my own music this time round. For the fun of it and to share with you guys. So till I blog again, good bye and good night. Time Check. 1.50am.

superband

Battle of the Bands

OK I admit I'm pretty hooked to every Monday's "SuperBand" showing of Channel U. It's probably more interesting than the pure singing competitions because some play their own music, some do a capella, some choreograph their own dance steps and on top of that every week you see some groups surprising you with their own gimmicks. That said, if you split them up into individuals and ask them to compete in a solo competition, most of them probably would not have done as well ( precisely why they form a band). Anyway the weakest link has finally and thank god been eliminated after weeks and weeks of outdoing more deserved groups. Anyway since I have nothing much to do, I shall come up with my own views of the final 8 bands! LOL

(in alphabetical order)

1. Brods - The charismatic brothers are the only duo in the competition and they have been depending on their vocals (and possibly good looks) to help them garner votes. Thankfully they are pretty competent singers and they harmonise pretty well but is that enough?

2. J3 - They are a breeze of fresh air like the judges always say and they are probably the best group vocally, injecting little surprises slowly but steadily. However their style of acoustic + harmonising might be to their disadvantage, appearing somewhat blend in comparison.

3. Juz-B - The a capella band is funny, creative and has been pretty consistent. However, while they are indeed credible, I feel that they are slightly over-rated. Maybe it's because of the live recording, they can sound pretty messy from time to time. But I salute them for their fine work in a language that is completely unfamiliar to them.

4. Lucify - The 5-piece rock band that was eliminated earlier to everyone's surprise. Back after the revival round and much stronger be it in terms of musicality, vocals, image or confidence, I think they have one of the strongest and most easily remembered image in this competition and I think they can go far.

5. Man Tou - A very hardworking band that has been trying very hard to prove themselves. But in the final 8, they are probably one of the most inconsistent and weakest groups.

6. Mi Lu Bing - One of my favourites especially after their recent weeks of performances. The guitarist and drummer have these interestingly contrasting vocals that works very well for the band. Unbelievably creative yet earnest in their delivery, the youngest and possibly most approachable band seems to have emerged as one of the strongest. *Their most recent performance was a surprise move. Brilliant.

7. QI:NOBE - Probably the most professional band in terms of musicality. But I agree wih the judges. They are capable of getting everyone high but that might not be enough. Every week of rock/rap/hip hop style seems to suggest that they are not versatile enough. They may be really good at what they do best but in this Chinese music industry, their brand of music might be too hard for most to swallow.

8. Soul - Almost your typical boyband except they dance really well and I think they actually can sing pretty well too. And their dance choreography is visually very impressive. Very energetic, very professional. One of my preferred bands too.

I don't know who is going to win but I think QI:NOBE and Soul are the hot favourites here. My pick for the final 4? Lucify, Mi Lu Bing, QI:NOBE and Soul.

OVERDUE!

OVERDUE!

Totally did not realise that it's almost been a month since I last wrote anything. "xing ku ni le!"

Fellow batchmates (Andy, Ashley, Dennis, Enghao, Junxiang, Kevin, Shijun) - for simply being a great bunch of people!

Alvin - for being a brilliant under-study and definitely a more capable Admin IC. Sorry that you have to work almost alone nowadays.

* Special thanks to Sergeant Nilkanth, Ashley, Dennis, Wenli, Yih Huat and the 5 NS men for making the Richmond trip fruitful and enjoyable.

Others:

Sergeant Donald - for taking good care of me especially during SAF Day 2004.

Sergeant Shirley - for being an absolutely fun and understanding coursemate and part of the Ex. Wallaby 2004 gang.

Sergeant Rachel - (same as above) + especially for taking care of me when I was sick during Ex. Wallaby 2004.

MAJ Mike - for being the first person (other than my relatives & friends) to encourage me in the aspect of song-writing.

-------------------------------------------------------------

That about sums up everything. There's no doubt others that I should thank too but the list of people here plays a more significant role. My 2 years and 4 months as an NSF has officially come to an end. Therefore, I've decided that I shall put away all the complaints and unhappiness and recap the memories of my NSF life and thank some of the people who have helped me along the way, which means this is gonna be quite a long entry! Hahaha.

I think I should go right to the point because I don't think there is really a need to do a stage by stage recap of my NSF life so I shall just touch on the highlights which I would say, happened all during my 2 year stay in Air Terminal Company, 3 TPT BN.

October 2004, I was given the chance to go to Rockhampton, Australia for Ex. Wallaby with my seniors and 4 other batchmates - Andy, Kangdi, Wenli and Yih Huat. It was totally different experience as when I travelled with Band. It was tougher, but there was fun too and it was then that the 5 of us bonded.

New Year's Eve, 30th December 2004, I was roped in to board LST 207 with my Platoon Commander (then) 2LT Eugene and other Bn mates to travel to Meulaboh to help out in the tsunami relief. The 24 days on board served as a reminder of how unpredictable life can be and therefore we should cherish ourselves and our loved ones more. It is also true honour to be able to be part of everything.

August 2005, Ashley, Dennis, Wenli, Yih Huat and I, together with 5 NSmen and a few commanders flew to Richmond, Australia for an overseas exercise. The stay was excellent and the trip was well-balanced with work and play. I got to see other parts of Australia (near Richmond) and re-visit Sydney as well! Of course there was chance to interact with Australians too!

October 2005, this time round, I went with almost the whole company to Rockhampton, Australia for Ex. Wallaby as a senior. It seemed to be an unspoken 'finale' to this NSF life although there was really a lot of work. But, it was a new experience, with new people and ultimately, it was a good trip.

That more or less sums up the highlights and I would really like to add that I've seen alot and learned alot. And at the same time, I've certainly grown quite a bit. Haha. In my next entry, I shall thank the people who have come into my life this 2 years and 4 months and created an impact.

Was kinda bored the other day so I went to the net to search for clarinet stuff... Anyway, after spending such a long long time, I've finally complete my... 1st piece of drawing for my portfolio. Hahahah... Ya ya I know what some of you must be thinking, that I've simply sepnt far too much time to complete just one piece. Well good news is I think I've sort of picked up a momentum so like I always said, once the 1st is done, it shouldn't take that long anymore.

Was watching Campus Superstar on Sunday and I must say Zhi Yang is really good! OK that is actually beside the point. What I wanna say is, looking at them compete and after everything, congratulate each other, hug one another etc etc, I actully felt kind of nostalgic. Suddenly I felt like I was brought back to JC times where we(band members) worked hard together, went for the competition together, await for the results together, laugh together, cry together (OK you get what I mean)... Those were innocent times and good memories...

Random Thoughts 2

1. The sadness of parting... I guess no matter how much i dislike about my workplace, there really are things that saddens me about leaving... Be it people, the kind of life I have been living for the past 2+ years, the things that I've learnt or experiences... I come to realise this during the graduation ceremony on the Saturday before the one that just passed where I was the emcee... I actually felt like I wanted to be the emcee even if I wasn't asked to do it... It's the last time and more significantly it felt like I'm handing everything to the new batch... esp. with the inauguration of the Red Hats... And watching the Ex Wallaby vids (rewinding year by year)... It suddenly struck me that time has really passed faster than I thought it would... I also realise that Ex. Wallaby'04 was my 1st video and Ex. Wallaby'05 the last... The memories, the growing up... It sounds crazy but I felt like crying as the videos and screened...

3. My portfolio is not done at all... except for some ideas and planning... nothing is concrete... and nothing has been started... Well.. I probably might not react the way I'm going to say when such happens to me but it'll be over ya... if it happens.. it happens... Just gotta try to resolve it and hopefully things will become better... Don't swallow everything inside if it is possible cos it sucks... I'm actually not too sure of what is going to become of my life after this... Anyway, (As if quite appropriately) went to watch Jarhead on Saturday. The story of US Marine Sniper Tony Swofford (Jake Gyllenhaal)... his life in the Marines and during (and after) the Persian Gulf War. Interesting movie I should say. Pretty unique for a War movie. ie. Not your typical war movie. In fact, this story about waiting doesn't see much of war actions. Like Swofford said, "4 days, 4 hours, 1 minute, that was my war" and he did not have the chance to kill even 1 or should I say, his war was not really a war. The anti-war message is quite obvious and war being meaningless seems to be reiterated a few times. There are several scenes that were meant to create ironies in themselves and I should say, spendidly done. This is a war film that actually shows u the lives of the personnel involved as well and instead of glory, we see how they seem to be withdrawn from real life and stuck in the past, during the war. Sad. The pace of the movie is fast and light on the whole but the subtle underlying deapth is impossible to ignore. Anyway Jake Gyllenhaal gave a sensitive and emotional performance and together with a strong supporting cast, this highly personal war flick is something that's worth catching.
Wow... Am i turning my blog into a movie review blog. hahaha.

Walk The Line

My very first posting of '06 and the first in abt half a yr. haha... Well... let's just say that life hasn't been that great for myself this new yr but i certainly hope u guys out there have been doing fine. Anyway, as my title suggests, I'm gonna talk less abt myself and share with u guys a movie that i just watched.

"Walk the Line", a 20th Century Fox flim directed by James Mangold, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon, brought Country legend Johnny Cash back to life. The show gave us almost all we needed to know about Cash until the point of his marriage with June Carter. For audience my age, I guess it was truly enlightening and entertaining to be introduced to this gifted musician (and his wife) who has already passed away 3 years ago. I really enjoyed watching Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon perform in the show. Trust me, they really can sing! That aside, their performances were incredible. Joaquin Phoenix's Johnny Cash was remarkably absorbing. There seems to be a certain pathos in the character(or the portrayal) that unknowingly makes audience sympathise with him. As for Reese Witherspoon, who has already garnered almost all the major awards for her role, let's just say she almost stole the show. She is splendid! (It's time we take this lady seriously!) Good luck to both for the Oscars!
Oh and.. I really think 'Ring of Fire' is super catchy!

Gonna book in soon... URGH!
